In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses different writing techniques, one of them being metaphors. In the scene when Romeo he describes himself as a sailboat, saying “that hath steerage of my course, direct my sail!”. By describing himself as a book, Romeo believes that he is not in control of his actions and he is asking god to direct him.

I’m really looking forward to drawing your attention to the moments when Shakespeare returns to this metaphor, and how this helps us understand Romeo’s gradual change throughout the play.
