After the death of his wife, Macbeth is in a state of sadness and despair. This is because he had already lost the loyalty and praise from the rest of the Scottish hierarchy, and his wife was the only person that was supporting him. When Macbeth says “life’s but a walking shadow”, he is saying that he no longer feels happiness, and has no reason to be alive. He then goes on to say that life is “Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”. What Macbeth is saying, is that life has a lot of unique events that take place throughout it that feel important, but in the end none of it has any meaning at all and nothing in life really matters.
