Macbeth Act 4

Scene 1

The 3 witches have a meeting with Macbeth. They warn him about Macduff, but tells Macbeth he can’t be harmed by a man who a woman has given birth. Macbeth vows to kill Macduff. He then wants to know if Banquo’s kids will be kings and the witches show eight kings with Banquo. Macbeth decides to attack Macduff’s castle and kill his family.

Quote: “The castle of Macduff I will surprise, seize upon fife; give to the edge of the sword his wife, his babies, and all unfortunate souls that trace his line.”

Scene 2

Lady Macduff believes Macduff is a traitor and thinks he must be dead but her son doesn’t think he is. A messenger arrives to warn them about murderers coming. The murderers burst in, kill Macduff’s son and goes after Lady Macduff who runs away.

Quote: “Every one that does so is a traitor, and must be hanged.” – Lady Macduff

Scene 3

Macduff goes to England to visit Malcolm and says he should be the king of Scotland. To test his loyalty, Malcolm says he would be an even worse king than Macbeth and portrays himself as a bad man that isn’t fit to be king. Macduff earns Malcolm’s trust by saying that he isn’t fit for king, but Malcolm reveals he was lying to test him. He then also tells him his plans to invade Scotland with the English army. Rosse then comes to report news from Scotland, and tells Macduff about his family being murdered. Malcolm and Macduff then leave to prepare their invasion.
